Bee pollen works well for weight loss, who knew?
Bee pollen is one of the richest and purest natural foods known to men. It’s a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and proteins, supplying us with almost every essential nutrient necessary for good health.
I have been successfully using it with clients wanting to lose weight. Let me share my insights and experience with you here.
What is bee pollen?
According to Eden Foods, in its original state, bee pollen is a fine dust composed of thousands of microscopic particles that enable plants to reproduce via seed. Pollen is discharged from the anther of a flower and is the major food source for bees and other insects.
Worker bees travel from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen as they move around. As the pollen covers the bee’s body, she brushes and packs it into specialised hairs on her hind legs to take back to the hive.
The bees collect more pollen than the hive needs, so beekeepers are able to collect the surplus in a mesh trap. As the bees enter a hive, they pass through a bank of specific sized holes where the pollen is gently removed and falls into a collection tray.
Quality of pollen is a very important consideration before using it. My favourite bee pollen product is Wildcrafted WA Bee Pollen from Western Australia. It’s raw and sun-dried, and ethically harvested from bees collecting pollen from seasonal blooms from native Western Australian trees.
These trees are located in the remote WA eucalyptus forests, and not found near towns, cities or industry.
How does bee pollen work for weight loss?
Some of the reasons it works for weight loss include:
- It stimulates metabolic processes which in turn speed up burning of calories.
- It corrects chemical imbalances that are usually involved in weight gain. This then regulates and stabilises appetite. At the same time is a natural energiser so you feel good whilst losing weight.
- It’s a low-calorie food but tasty and easy to eat.
- Rich in lecithin which helps with fat digestion and metabolism. This is also a reason why bee pollen lowers LDL and increases helpful HDL cholesterol.
- Because pollen is so nutritionally complete and balanced, it helps reduce food cravings. Its natural phenylalanine (an essential amino acid) content acts as an appetite suppressant.
- It has high protein content which helps to achieve improves satiety and lessens overeating. It contains more protein than any animal source and more amino acids than equal weight of eggs or beef (approximately 40% protein).
- Bee pollen is more valuable then both honey and royal jelly. It has a similar but more stable composition than that of royal jelly.
Please note, that it’s mandatory to test every person intending to eat bee pollen for possible allergy before ingesting it.
Needless to say, weight loss results are dependent on doses and intake which should be tailored for each individual. Consult with your health practitioner what doses would be best for you.
Do you suffer from food intolerances and react to foods with bloating, indigestion or diarrhoea?
Then consider doing IgG Food sensitivity testing to find the right foods for YOUR body.

I received a bottle as a gift, I put a pinch between my lip and teeth as it melted.an hour or so later I felt great and energetic I use honey, but never pollen, I will dose as you mentioned morning and afternoon, I’m concerned that it might keep me up.
Hi Brent! Yes, start slowly and observe the effects on your energy levels and how stimulating is it for you, for a few weeks before deciding how much to take for best results. Bee pollen is such a fantastic food and supplement to have in your cupboard or even better, fridge to preserve the goodness. Let me know how you go, please!
Can you take bee pollen if your type 2 diabetic?
Thank you for your question. Yes, bee pollen can be taken if you have diabetes as it’s low in sugar and high in enzymes, minerals and vitamins that improve metabolism and help with weight loss. Quality is very important for effectiveness. As for the dose, follow the recommendations of the specific manufacturer or consult with your nutritionist prior to taking it.
I am hypothyroid and trying to lose weight with bee pollen. Is there a specific regime I should use regarding the amounts of pollen to take and when to take it. With meals or on an empty stomach?Any advice you can give I would be so appreciative of:)
Thank you for your time!

I think it’s a great idea Ann!
I suggest you start slowly with a few granules and build up your consumption over time to as much as several tablespoons daily. You’ll need to find your own optimal dose by monitoring how you feel and achieve your health improvements. As for the timing, I take it first in the morning before breakfast and in the afternoon at around 3pm to lessen the afternoon energy slump (if present) but I wouldn’t be concerned about when you take it. The most important thing is to take it regularly!
Also, don’t use bee pollen in the form of tablets as heating of pollen during manufacturing destroys its enzymes and vitamin content. Best to buy it in granules that can be chewed and eaten. Dissolve the granules until liquid in the saliva of the mouth and swallow.
Keep opened containers of pollen in the refrigerator. Quality is key!
Were is the best place to perches the granules I also would like to use for weight loss
Hi there
I’m not sure where to buy a good quality bee pollen in the UK. In Australia I buy mine from Eden Foods https://www.edenhealthfoods.com.au/products/edens-powderbark-bee-pollen
